Beattie Mansion Known affectionately as the House on the Hill is an incredible building with a rich history. Built in 1854 by Armstrong and Eliza Beattie as their personal residence, the building originally consisted of just the east wing. Armstrong was the 1st banker in St. Joseph and was a shrewd and wealthy businessman. Armstrong died mysteriously in 1878 after a “sudden bout of cholera”. Eliza died 2 years later in 1880 and the couple left no heirs. The home was sold to the Ladies Union Benevolence Association (LUBA) and became a “Home for the Friendless” accommodating the homeless and distressed. In 1895, along with funding from a private family, the home was expanded and the west wing was built. Many spirits are said to still reside in the mansion, most prominently those of Armstrong and Eliza Beattie!
Glore Psychiatric Museum Once serving as the State Lunatic Aslyum #2, the Glore now houses a well known Psychiatric Museum, as well as the St. Joseph Museums in it's 4 story building. Numerous spirits of old patients are said to reside in the museum, along with previous doctors and staff. Wyeth-Tootle Mansion In 1879 Mr. and Mrs. Wyeth hired famed architect E.J. Eckel to build this amazing mansion sitting atop a hill in St. Joseph. Later selling the home to Katherine Tootle and inherited by Milton Tootle Jr. and his wife Lillian. Milton Jr. and Lillian both died in the home of old age and are the only documented deaths in the home. The home passed on to the City of St. Joseph and served as the St. Joseph Museum Headquarters for many years before being relocated to the Glore Psychiatric Museum. Today it operates as a museum and hosts special events. A male spirit is said to reside on the 3rd floor and numerous voices and apparitions are seen throughout the location, including those of servants. Check out their website for more information HERE!
